7.20 What’s On My Nightstand: Camping Edition https://nowandgen.com/2020/07/17/7-20-whats-on-my-nightstand-camping-edition/ https://nowandgen.com/2020/07/17/7-20-whats-on-my-nightstand-camping-edition/#comments Fri, 17 Jul 2020 20:45:58 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=5634 After three-and-a-half months of quarantining, I wanted to take advantage of the open road and try to find a new horizon for our family. While it seems like an odd time to consider a summer vacation, I find that I do my best thinking when I can get outdoors and into nature. I knew the change of scenery would do us (well, me) good. Traveling by road with three children under 8 is hellacious in itself, but add in a pandemic and it means a whole new set of challenges. But I wanted to get moving, and graciously, my husband obliged. So we packed up and hit the road. (Look for a blog post with information on how we traveled safely soon!) Instead of sharing what’s on my nightstand like usual, this month I wanted to share what’s on my nightstand: camping edition. From my favorite toiletries to water bottles to apps, my bag is chock-full of travel essentials. Read on to find six of my favorite things for the next time you go exploring. Beekman Shampoo Bar  Since it’s Plastic Free July, I’m trying to do our best at using plastic less. Everyone in our crew has different creature comforts, […]

How to Start a Greener Beauty Routine https://nowandgen.com/2020/02/26/how-to-start-a-greener-beauty-routine/ https://nowandgen.com/2020/02/26/how-to-start-a-greener-beauty-routine/#comments Wed, 26 Feb 2020 14:00:46 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=5097 About three years ago, I met makeup artist Campbell Ritchie at a photo shoot. We hit it off immediately and have been besties ever since. Not only is the Australian native a talented makeup artist, but she is also a two-time cancer survivor, a committed vegan, and an eco-friendly enthusiast who is an expert at starting a greener beauty routine. Whether she’s doing makeup for a fashion show, magazine editorial, or the red carpet, she only uses beauty products that are vegan and cruelty-free. As you know, I’ve been trying to be more green in my everyday life, from making reusable beeswax food wraps to buying eco-friendly fashion brands—and that includes starting a greener beauty routine. And while I don’t think anyone should feel like they need to go out and buy a bunch of new beauty products, I’ve been looking for greener alternatives when I run out of favorite products. The interesting thing is that the beauty industry is kind of like the Wild West in regards to the toxins and additives in products. The FDA doesn’t even approve cosmetic products or ingredients (other than color additives) before they go to market, so you really have to do your homework […]

2.20: What’s On My Nightstand https://nowandgen.com/2020/02/12/2-20-whats-on-my-nightstand/ https://nowandgen.com/2020/02/12/2-20-whats-on-my-nightstand/#comments Wed, 12 Feb 2020 14:00:04 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=5087 Confession: I’m not a huge fan of Valentine’s Day. It feels so manufactured to me, probably because it is! But I do think the Hallmark holiday can be a good reminder to celebrate love. And you can tell from what’s on my nightstand this month that February is all about love—and I don’t just mean love with a partner. Loving yourself by indulging with self-care rituals and celebrating the love you give and receive as a caregiver are equally important. The items on my bedside table this month, which run the gamut from a rejuvenating face mask to a ground-breaking book that examines the sex and emotional lives of women, are a mix of things that get me thinking about sex and self-love. Read on for the four items on my nightstand right now, plus an adorable sweatshirt that celebrates my biggest role of all: Mother. What’s On My Nightstand Moon Juice Sex Dust Add this blend of herbs to your morning coffee or smoothie to boost your sex drive, reduce stress, balance hormones, and even increase your creativity. Maybe it’s a placebo, but just the thought of taking this gets me in the mood. Necessaire The Sex Gel You […]

12.19: What’s On My Nightstand https://nowandgen.com/2019/12/07/12-19-whats-on-my-nightstand/ https://nowandgen.com/2019/12/07/12-19-whats-on-my-nightstand/#comments Sat, 07 Dec 2019 14:00:58 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=4869 As I mentioned last month, I’ve noticed that what’s on my nightstand is a perfect reflection of how I’m feeling and what I’m focusing on. This month, it’s all about reflection and self-care. The holidays always get me a little frazzled. I want to savor the last days of the year, but between all the shopping, holiday functions, the kids’ breaks from school, and trying to manage the blog, I often feel like my head isn’t on straight. So, the items on my bedside table this month are a mix of things that make me slow down and help soothe my mind and body. What’s On My Nightstand Pretty flowers Flowers always make me happy. They also make a room feel brighter, cleaner, and prettier, which is why you’ll often find a gorgeous floral arrangement on my nightstand. I like to switch between the sculpture-like bouquets created by Antonio Bond at Transplant Floral Design and the bright and cheery floral and succulent arrangements found at King Florist of Austin. Waking up to fresh flowers every morning is my sure-fire way to start the day off with a smile. Reset drink My friend Sandy is taking a holistic nutrition class, and she […]

Skincare secrets to live by: A Q&A with Dr. Barney Kenet https://nowandgen.com/2019/01/30/skincare-secrets-to-live-by-a-qa-with-dr-barney-kenet/ https://nowandgen.com/2019/01/30/skincare-secrets-to-live-by-a-qa-with-dr-barney-kenet/#comments Wed, 30 Jan 2019 18:30:10 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=3499 Ok, I resisted the 10-year challenge as long as I could. Here you go… Us in 2009 And us in 2019 Ahh, how fresh-faced and well-rested we looked before having three kids. If we only knew then what we know now…we would have savored sleeping in so much more! If we’ve learned one thing over the past 10 years, it’s that being a parent certainly does keep you humble. When I compare them side-by-side, I can’t help but think that we were babies – complete with baby faces – back then. Now, life looks more full of love than I thought possible – even if we aren’t so fresh-faced any longer. The incredible moments we’ve experienced over the past decade have been worth every laugh line—but I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t mind erasing a wrinkle (or two). My current beauty go-to to hide tired eyes: First Aid Beauty Skin Lab Retinol Cream. I’m a long-time fan of the cruelty-free brand and this new formula is amazingly gentle—which I love because I’ve always been a little intimidated by retinol creams. It also has these micro-pearls that instantly help brighten dark circles—a godsend after a late night with the […]

Easy Sheet Masks for Mama “Me Time” https://nowandgen.com/2018/01/25/easy-sheet-masks-for-mama-me-time/ https://nowandgen.com/2018/01/25/easy-sheet-masks-for-mama-me-time/#comments Thu, 25 Jan 2018 19:17:08 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=1507 Life is pretty hectic lately.  Our family has been on the road and in an out of airplanes, which for me means sad, dry, tired skin. As I’ve said before, I look for products that are naturally based. From household items to skincare, I think differently about what I buy with three kids under 6 touching everything I use around the house (sometimes that includes my beauty products). So when I get the chance to steal 5 minutes to myself, I love to throw on a sheet mask and collapse onto the couch for some uninterrupted “me time.” I found Burt’s Bees years ago. I’m a big fan of their lip balms, and was so excited when they branched out into skin care and beauty. So, when they told me they were launching sheet masks, it made sense to partner with them to share my experience with you. And I found their Hydrating Sheet Masks and Rejuvenating Eye Masks perfect for my low maintenance, on-the-go lifestyle.  The masks are clinically proven to improve skin texture and help balance pH.They’re made of 99% natural ingredients including kiwi extract and willow bark that help keep dehydration at bay. The mask’s clary sage […]

The Skincare Must-Have for Your Christmas List https://nowandgen.com/2017/12/15/skincare-must-christmas-list/ https://nowandgen.com/2017/12/15/skincare-must-christmas-list/#comments Fri, 15 Dec 2017 23:45:16 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=1261 Skincare is important to me. Clean skin is non-negotiable, but so is time management. With three kids under six, I don’t have an hour to spend in front of the mirror applying creams and serums when I’m yelling at my tribe to brush their teeth. I use a good face cleanser and moisturizer, but, let’s face it, sometimes “clean skin” means grabbing a makeup wipe and crashing right into bed. During the holidays, there are times when I find myself rushing around frantically. There are gifts to buy, cookies to bake, kids to take care of…it can be a lot, and it takes a toll on my skin. The sweat of being a busy mama of three never ceases to stop! In my nightly routine, I use Kleenex® Facial Cleansing products to wipe away my makeup from the day. I’m loving their holiday Very Merry Cleansing Collection because it has everything I need: Eye Makeup Removers that really work to get off every last bit of undereye concealer, Cotton Soft Pads for extra makeup cleanup, Daily Cleansing Cushions, Facial Cleansing Wipes to wash my face (for long days I can barely make it to the sink!) and even to scrub and […]
