This 10-minute circuit is genius because you can do it anywhere, you don’t need any equipment, and you are guaranteed to feel the burn. (My triceps were on fire after filming this video.)

Since I’m a runner, I need strength and power in my lower body, and since I’m a busy mom, I need to work out those areas quickly and efficiently. At just 10 minutes long, this workout is the perfect way to tone up the legs and booty in a short amount of time. As you’ll see in the video below, this workout is made up of two quick circuits that focus on your booty, quads, hamstrings, and inner and outer thighs. As Michelle mentions, you can do the workout in 10 minutes, or you can run through it twice for an extra burn. Watch the video and check out the step-by-step instructions below, and then get to it. Let me know in the comments how you liked the workout! Workouts You Can Do Anywhere: Booty Circuit #1: 30 seconds each (no rest between exercises, 2 min of work) Squats Standing with your feet hip-width apart, bend your knees and push your booty back, chest up, weight in your heels.  Alternating step […]

The Full-Body Stretch We All Need Right Now https://nowandgen.com/2020/05/21/the-full-body-stretch-we-all-need-right-now/ https://nowandgen.com/2020/05/21/the-full-body-stretch-we-all-need-right-now/#comments Thu, 21 May 2020 15:39:37 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=5470 Moving my body is something that’s really important to me, and I love to switch it up: running, yoga, classes, hikes. So exercising during quarantine has definitely been challenging. With nowhere to go, I’ve relied heavily on full-body stretch workouts from my friend and trainer Michelle Kuhnreich to fit in whenever and wherever (like the bathroom floor while I supervise the kids). It really doesn’t matter where I workout. Sometimes I just need to get moving and can’t make it outside. Luckily, Michelle and I had filmed this full-body anywhere flow video before we went into lockdown. I’ve started doing these moves a few times a week, and each time I feel more grounded and energized immediately. It’s a great way to connect with your body and breath, release tension, and add some relaxation to your day. This flow workout stretches your hips, hamstrings, chest, quads, and lower back. It’s the full-body stretch we all need right now.  Even better: You can do this quick flow workout anywhere, in your living room, the garage, or on a mat in the sunshine. Watch the video and check out the step-by-step instructions below, and then get stretching!   SEQUENCE 1 Start in child’s pose […]

My Favorite Cold-Weather Workout Gear https://nowandgen.com/2019/10/19/my-favorite-cold-weather-workout-gear/ https://nowandgen.com/2019/10/19/my-favorite-cold-weather-workout-gear/#comments Sat, 19 Oct 2019 15:38:16 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=4642 I’ve professed my love for working out in the outdoors here before, and that remains true even in the winter. When I go for a run or hike outside, even when it’s freezing cold, it feels less like a chore and more like an adventure. But I’ve learned the hard way that if you’re going to get your sweat on outside when the temps drop below 50, you need to have the right cold-weather workout gear to keep you warm while wicking the sweat away.  Over the years, I’ve tested out my fair share of running tights, hoodies, parkas and more, so I wanted to share six of my favorite cold-weather workout gear items. Do you have any favorite winter workout finds I should know about? Tell me in the comments below! Favorite Vest: Prana Diva Vest This insulated vest keeps me cozy while still letting me move freely while pounding the pavement. I love its Sherpa lining and the knit side panels that offer breathability. Plus, it’s super cute! Favorite Light Jacket: Lululemon Cross Chill Jacket I’m always cold, so I love this water-repellent windbreaker because of it’s fleece lining, thumbholes, and cinchable hoodie. And the reflective details keep me […]

How I Make the Outdoors My Gym https://nowandgen.com/2019/08/16/how-i-make-the-outdoors-my-gym/ https://nowandgen.com/2019/08/16/how-i-make-the-outdoors-my-gym/#comments Fri, 16 Aug 2019 15:12:27 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=4132 I love a good spin class, but nothing beats exercising in the open air. Outdoor workouts always seem to go by faster and something about being in nature just soothes my soul and helps me get my head right. As a mom, I also find that if I make the outdoors my gym, it’s easier to squeeze in a workout because I can incorporate it into play with my kids.  Of course, in the peak heat of summer, I always try to plan my workouts in the mornings or evenings when it’s somewhat cooler. And I’m always careful to slather on sunscreen and take plenty of water breaks.  Here are my four favorite ways to break a sweat in the great outdoors. What about you? I’d love to hear your go-to outdoor workouts. Head for the Summit There’s a lot of stuff I want—and need!—to do every day, so sometimes I have to do two things at once to get it all done. Now that the boys are getting older, hiking has become one of our go-to activities together. (Odette acts as my weights by tagging along in a carrier or a hiking backpack—extra toning for the win!) When we […]

A Total Body Workout You Can Do At Home https://nowandgen.com/2019/04/30/full-body-workout-routine/ https://nowandgen.com/2019/04/30/full-body-workout-routine/#comments Tue, 30 Apr 2019 16:46:50 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=3841 When I began marathon training, it seemed like the perfect excuse to skip my weight workouts. Because, let’s be real, who has time to run that many miles AND strength train?? But, I quickly learned that all that running required some serious support—and not just from workout buddies. I was getting injuries—the main one being my knee—and realized that keeping my strength was critical to keeping my body healthy. I reached out to my friend and trainer Michelle Kuhnreich for help. She showed me some great strength training workouts that I could do at home, and how to retrain my muscles to support my knee. Her full body workouts were a key component to my marathon success and this is one of my all-time favorite routines. It’s a full body lengthening and toning workout that engages your core with every move. We used a resistant band and yoga block, but don’t worry — you can still do the moves without any equipment!! Check out the video and step-by-step instructions below. THE WARM-UP Repeat these moves 2x: Squats 12x Jump squats 12x Hold squat pulse (12-20 pulses) Reverse lunge and kick (left) 12x Reverse lunge and kick (right) 12x Half Burpees […]

The Five Reasons Why I Run https://nowandgen.com/2019/04/24/the-five-reasons-why-i-run/ https://nowandgen.com/2019/04/24/the-five-reasons-why-i-run/#comments Wed, 24 Apr 2019 15:05:03 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=3830 To be honest, I thought I’d hang up my running shoes for a few weeks (or months) after the marathon was over. But when Lululemon asked me to participate in their campaign to promote running with purpose, I couldn’t resist lacing up again. I truly believe that running has the power to change your life. It’s why I ran the marathon for Dream Big! And it’s why I’ve been sharing my training experience and encouraging all of you to join me in the 5K Challenge. I’m so thankful for my childhood soccer days in part because it forced me to run…A LOT. I even ended up running my first 10K with my dad (Diablo Mountain run) when I was just 8 or 9 years old. Running has given me an invaluable outlet over the years. Hitting the pavement or a trail—or even the treadmill—has always felt freeing and been my healthy escape. That doesn’t mean it’s always easy. I still have nightmares about my team sprint drills, marathon training was harder than I ever imagined, and I felt like I hit a wall when I reached the 22-mile mark in Boston. Reminding myself why I was out there in the […]

My guide to surviving marathon training https://nowandgen.com/2019/04/16/my-guide-to-surviving-marathon-training/ https://nowandgen.com/2019/04/16/my-guide-to-surviving-marathon-training/#comments Tue, 16 Apr 2019 20:56:56 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=3786 26.2 miles isn’t just 26.2 miles. It’s 1,000s of miles of training to support the actual race. That’s a lot of pavement underneath my feet. When I signed up for the Boston marathon I walked into it with little knowledge. I foolishly figured I would just run weekly and eventually have enough mileage, strength and endurance to cross the finish line. But I realized early on that going the distance was more than just running.   Like pregnancy and motherhood, my journey to the marathon included a ton of surprises—and lots of late-night researching. I spent countless hours looking for the perfect gear that wouldn’t chafe and shoes that fit in just the right way (and would cause the least amount of toenail loss—gross, I know). Quality and quantity of the right meals were also challenges. Figuring out what to eat pre- and post-training to avoid upsetting my stomach or making me sluggish. I also learned how crucial it was to find the right fit in a running group and a coach who could help me find the right balance of miles in my training—and encouragement to find the time while balancing being a mom. Most importantly, I learned a […]
