10 Postpartum Essentials https://nowandgen.com/2020/05/12/postpartum-essentials/ https://nowandgen.com/2020/05/12/postpartum-essentials/#comments Tue, 12 May 2020 15:28:47 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=5204 Since we just celebrated Mother’s Day, I want to highlight the importance of taking care of new moms and some postpartum essentials that can help ease the transition into motherhood. Sometimes, it feels like we worry so much about the baby that we forget about the person who just went through a grueling delivery.  Giving birth is a life-changing event that should be openly discussed. It’s one of the most challenging and transformative experiences a woman can go through. I found sharing my birthing experiences particularly cathartic, and I was really moved by your stories, birthing journeys, and questions. If you’re pregnant (or know someone who is), there are some postpartum essentials that I think every mama needs. Here, 10 of my favorite items to help nurture yourself during those intense newborn days.  Soft robe The last thing you’ll want to do after giving birth is put on pants—or really any clothes. You’re incredibly sore all over and it’s a tad tough to walk. Since you want something non-binding and open in the front that provides easy access for breastfeeding, if you are going that route, I’ve found that a soft robe is the ideal postpartum look. This unisex robe […]

Parenting Through a Pandemic https://nowandgen.com/2020/04/25/parenting-through-a-pandemic/ https://nowandgen.com/2020/04/25/parenting-through-a-pandemic/#comments Sat, 25 Apr 2020 14:00:37 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=5335 When I first started this blog, I wrote about how I wished we’d all stop the mom shaming. (And yes, for some reason it’s always mom shaming, not dad shaming!) So I was thrilled when I heard that Lindsay Powers, who was editor in chief of Yahoo Parenting when they created the #NoShameParenting movement, wrote a book. Called You Can’t F*ck Up Your Kids, the book is a research-based, judgment-free look at hot button parenting issues, from breastfeeding to daycare to sleep training. Lindsay spoke to dozens of experts, ranging from doctors (including the pediatrician who co-wrote the American Academy of Pediatric screen-time rules), to researchers, social workers, and more—she’d basically an encyclopedia of parenting information. Since we’re all learning as we go while parenting through a pandemic, I asked Lindsay to answer some questions I’ve had about how to keep yourself and your kiddos happy and sane during these crazy times. Keep reading for her level-headed tips on everything from screen-time restrictions to how to help anxious kids cope. And then let me know in the comments: What’s been your biggest parenting win and biggest struggle since having to quarantine at home? Covid-19 has changed the world—and parenting—in a […]

Sharing my birth stories https://nowandgen.com/2020/03/18/sharing-my-birth-stories/ https://nowandgen.com/2020/03/18/sharing-my-birth-stories/#comments Wed, 18 Mar 2020 22:54:23 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=5239 Yesterday, my baby turned three and tomorrow my eldest, Tom, will officially be an 8-year-old. Their birthdays are making me incredibly nostalgic. I’ve been going down the rabbit hole looking at all their baby pictures. It’s also made me reflective about motherhood and childbirth. Hearing others’ birth stories was so helpful and empowering for me. So, I wanted to share my birth stories with all of you. I grew up with a mom who gave birth to all three of my younger siblings at home. I saw how empowering the experience was for her and always knew that having a home birth was something I wanted for myself. However, as you’ll see in the video below, I learned very quickly that childbirth doesn’t always go the way you’ve planned. In fact, all of my kids’ births were wildly different than I had imagined. Regardless, the biggest lesson I learned through all three labors was how important it is to have people you trust and can rely on in your corner to cheer you on and make decisions on your behalf. For me, that was my midwife Sally Avenson, my doula Carrie Kenner, and my husband Jared. (And a special shout out […]

How to Make Delicious (and Filling!) Smoothies https://nowandgen.com/2020/03/05/how-to-make-delicious-and-filling-smoothies/ https://nowandgen.com/2020/03/05/how-to-make-delicious-and-filling-smoothies/#comments Thu, 05 Mar 2020 17:25:51 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=5134 With three kids at two different schools, mornings in our house can be chaotic. My number one priority each morning is making sure that their little bellies are filled with something healthy when they walk out the door. Since quick options are a must, one of our breakfast go-tos is smoothies. I’m always looking for new ideas to boost the nutrition and staying power for our smoothie concoctions, so I was thrilled when I heard that Catherine McCord of Weelicious has a new book out called Smoothie Project: The 28-Day Plan to Feel Happy and Healthy No Matter Your Age. The book boasts more than 100 smoothie recipes—yum! I reached out to Catherine about her love for smoothies, including what started her on this journey and her secret to making smoothies that are delicious, nutritious, and filling. Read on for all the goodness (and to see Catherine’s awesome smoothie planner sheet!), and let me know your favorite smoothie combination in the comments. What started your interest in smoothies? I’ve always loved smoothies and drank them through my pregnancies, but the Smoothie Project started when my son, Kenyan, was very sick last year. He was lethargic and had headaches and nausea for […]

DIY Wrapping Paper https://nowandgen.com/2019/12/19/diy-wrapping-paper/ https://nowandgen.com/2019/12/19/diy-wrapping-paper/#comments Thu, 19 Dec 2019 22:40:31 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=5009 There are always a million things to do during the holidays. No matter how prepped I think I am, it feels as though an entire year of to-dos get crammed into these two weeks. That’s why I love finding activities that can check off a few boxes at the same time. This year, the kids and I decided to channel our inner Van Gogh and make DIY wrapping paper. I got my gift wrapping done and spent quality time with the kids, and they got to make a big mess and release some creative energy. It was a win-win for everybody! The wrapping paper we made is far from Pinterest-perfect, but I love that it gives an added personal touch and detail to our gift giving. O and the boys had so much fun designing their own presents, and it’s an added bonus for the grandparents who love to receive these special works of art from the kids. Want to give it a try? Don’t worry, this super easy DIY is basically impossible to screw up. Here’s how we did it: What You’ll Need roll of recycled Kraft paper paints (we used Tempera paints and paint sticks) paintbrushes small bowls […]

Creating a Tablecloth of Gratitude https://nowandgen.com/2019/11/26/creating-a-tablecloth-of-gratitude/ https://nowandgen.com/2019/11/26/creating-a-tablecloth-of-gratitude/#comments Tue, 26 Nov 2019 23:22:54 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=4775 No matter how planned the day is, Thanksgiving always feels so frantic. This year, I wanted to create a personal touch that could be a conversation starter and sweet contribution to our Thanksgiving and allow our family some time to reflect on the year. Since I love home decor and tablescapes centered around fall and family, I had the idea to make a gratitude tablecloth. It’s easy to lose sight of our memories and what we are thankful for, so it was wonderful to all gather together to artistically illustrate our favorite moments from the year. I also love that the gratitude tablecloth is not too precious. I want it to live under our plates and trays and for every wine ring and gravy stain to add to the decor and the memories. It’s messy, just like we are! I have to admit, it didn’t come out exactly as I was envisioning—it’s not quite as bright and full as I thought it would be, though I realize that will take time and memories. But it did its job to get the kids thinking about all the wonderful things they have in their lives, from family and friends to toys and […]
