My Aunt’s Famous Biscotti Recipe https://nowandgen.com/2019/12/21/my-aunts-famous-biscotti-recipe/ https://nowandgen.com/2019/12/21/my-aunts-famous-biscotti-recipe/#comments Sat, 21 Dec 2019 08:31:06 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=4943 Growing up, my family was traditional in the sense that every Christmas we picked out our tree, scattered ornaments around the floor, and discussed (and fought over) which ornament went where—and who got to hang the angel. We drove through neighborhoods strung with lights and with Santas flying over chimneys and voted on which house we loved the most that year. We did the obligatory smile-for-the-camera Christmas photos, but that was pretty much the extent of our “traditions.” I always attempted to bake, but being the oldest of four unique siblings, I felt like I could never satisfy everyone’s cravings. The one exciting treat everyone agreed upon was waiting in a shiny tin that arrived by post promptly before every Christmas. The contents inside were the most delectable homemade biscotti from my Aunt Cathy. These biscotti had the best crunch (not too firm and not too chewy) and soaked up hot chocolate, coffee, or tea just right. I looked forward to my Aunt Cathy’s shipment every year. And even though we lived close to each other for the 13 years that I lived in the Bay Area, she never failed to mail them. Maybe it’s her Georgia roots and Southern traditions, […]

DIY Wrapping Paper https://nowandgen.com/2019/12/19/diy-wrapping-paper/ https://nowandgen.com/2019/12/19/diy-wrapping-paper/#comments Thu, 19 Dec 2019 22:40:31 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=5009 There are always a million things to do during the holidays. No matter how prepped I think I am, it feels as though an entire year of to-dos get crammed into these two weeks. That’s why I love finding activities that can check off a few boxes at the same time. This year, the kids and I decided to channel our inner Van Gogh and make DIY wrapping paper. I got my gift wrapping done and spent quality time with the kids, and they got to make a big mess and release some creative energy. It was a win-win for everybody! The wrapping paper we made is far from Pinterest-perfect, but I love that it gives an added personal touch and detail to our gift giving. O and the boys had so much fun designing their own presents, and it’s an added bonus for the grandparents who love to receive these special works of art from the kids. Want to give it a try? Don’t worry, this super easy DIY is basically impossible to screw up. Here’s how we did it: What You’ll Need roll of recycled Kraft paper paints (we used Tempera paints and paint sticks) paintbrushes small bowls […]

Holiday Looks From Reformation https://nowandgen.com/2019/12/17/holiday-looks-from-reformation/ https://nowandgen.com/2019/12/17/holiday-looks-from-reformation/#comments Tue, 17 Dec 2019 20:40:02 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=4984 I love a holiday party. (Though if I’m being totally honest, I’d prefer to skip big holiday bashes. Small, intimate parties are more my jam.) Since I wear mostly jeans and T-shirts in my everyday life, I’m happy for any excuse to get dressed up. Breaking out a sexy dress, fancy jewelry, and sky-high heels? Yes, please! One of my favorite brands for holiday looks is Reformation. Their silhouettes are always effortlessly stylish and their commitment to sustainability is icing on the cake. Here are three of my favorite glam holiday dresses from Reformation, plus how I would accessorize the looks. Let me know in the comments: Which one would you wear to a holiday party? Lawrence Dress in Persephone I love the way this dress is cut. It has an A-line, mid-length skirt with a high slit that makes it sexy for holiday parties and versatile for the hot summer months. Wear it with this chic coin necklace and these thunderbolt stud earrings, both from ERTH. Dane Dress This dress is the definition of effortlessly sexy. I love that the long length perfectly balances the low-cut neckline, while the smocked waist and slightly puffed sleeves are also fun details. Sadly, this […]

Gluten Free Christmas Cookies https://nowandgen.com/2019/12/11/gluten-free-christmas-cookies/ https://nowandgen.com/2019/12/11/gluten-free-christmas-cookies/#comments Wed, 11 Dec 2019 17:16:26 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=4871 There’s nothing the kids and I love more than turning on some holiday tunes and getting silly while making and decorating Christmas cookies. But that’s gotten a bit trickier to do since I’ve gone gluten free. So, I asked my friend and cookie connoisseur Lindsey Johnson (check out her Instagram @ladyinthewildwest) for ideas. She was sweet enough to share this holiday cookie recipe that is both gorgeous and gluten free! The “painted” ornaments are made with a delicious blend of chocolate and peppermint. And while these gluten free Christmas cookies look amazingly artistic, I promise you that they are easier to make than you would think!  Keep reading for Lindsay’s fantastic ornament cookies recipe. And tell me in the comments: What’s your favorite holiday cookie to make (eat!)? Ornament Cookies By Lindsey Johnson One of our favorite cookies for the holiday season, these chocolate peppermint sugar cookies are simple to make, won’t spread in the oven, and taste just like brownies. They’re delicious on their own, but for a festive family craft project, we’ve dipped them in colorful vanilla candy coating and added gold luster dust to make them look like beautiful ornaments. Such a cute holiday gift! That is, if […]

How to Stay Healthy (and Sane!) This Holiday Season https://nowandgen.com/2019/12/09/how-to-stay-healthy-and-sane-this-holiday-season/ https://nowandgen.com/2019/12/09/how-to-stay-healthy-and-sane-this-holiday-season/#comments Mon, 09 Dec 2019 16:21:04 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=4817 I was looking through old pictures from last year and came across this one where I look like a reindeer in headlights. I was dealing with a severe cold, my daughter had just had her hair ripped out by a runaway vacuum (yep, it really happened), and both boys got a stomach bug. We’d hardly started the holidays and I could barely keep up. This year, I’m hoping things go more smoothly, so I turned to Deanna Ford, a registered dietitian and nutritionist at Resilient Health, to get her secrets for staying healthy and sane through the holiday season. I’ve been working with Deanna for almost a year after experiencing intense brain fog and even some dizzy spells in 2018. Although I didn’t have any celiac factors, the folks at Resilient Health tested my DNA and found out I had a malabsorption of trace minerals. They convinced me to go gluten free, even though I was resistant (I didn’t want to give up beer!), and it’s been a game changer. Within six weeks of making the change, my brain fog was gone. The results were so shocking, I couldn’t ignore it. So I knew that Deanna would be the perfect expert to […]
