Turning Words Into Action

I have always prided myself on being informed, but, after listening, researching and looking inward this past week, I’ve realized that I still have a lot to learn (and unlearn) about being a true ally. That’s uncomfortable to admit. The perfectionist in me never wants to do or say the wrong thing. But I’m realizing that the only way to move forward in a meaningful way is to be willing to sit in that discomfort and learn from it. This past week I’ve been opening the pages of suggested books on anti-racism, engaging in uncomfortable conversations and digging further into the products and platforms that I support. What I found showed me that I need to be doing a lot more to ensure that I’m listening to and empowering a diverse community. For example, I consider myself an advocate for the earth yet am unfamiliar with many black environmental activists and how their perspectives can advance my understanding of the issues I care about. I often recommend products here on the blog, but few are made by BIPOC. At this point, Elon Musk’s mission to Mars couldn’t come any faster. We’ve all been cooped up with nowhere to go and running out of ideas to keep everyone entertained. We’ve baked bread, planted vegetables, and made chalk obstacle courses—that I still am unable to get out of my kids’ clothes and our new sofa cushions, FYI. And I don’t know about you, but I’m not super enthusiastic about going totally back to “normal” yet. So this means more at-home time. Since we just celebrated Mother’s Day, I want to highlight the importance of taking care of new moms and some postpartum essentials that can help ease the transition into motherhood. Sometimes, it feels like we worry so much about the baby that we forget about the person who just went through a grueling delivery. Giving birth is a life-changing event that should be openly discussed. It’s one of the most challenging and transformative experiences a woman can go through. I found sharing my birthing experiences particularly cathartic, and I was really moved by your stories, birthing journeys, and questions. If you’re pregnant (or know someone who is), there are some postpartum essentials that I think every mama needs. Celebrating Mother’s Day From Afar

She is about 5’ on a good day. Her blonde hair kisses the nape of her neck and her green eyes shine so bright. She makes everyone feel a ray of sunshine with her infectious smile (sometimes with pink lipstick on her teeth). I grew up on her Marion Cunningham waffles. I would watch her make the recipe in the evening and wake to the smell of the batter wafting out of the iron. In each square, I’d carefully pour butter first, then top it off with pure maple syrup. It was a ritual we had every morning that I stayed at her home. She would dust it with confectioners sugar and a dollop whipped cream to make sure I was extra spoiled and I never had just one. My grandmother gave me a lot of firsts: The first time I went fishing, the first time I went bra shopping, the first person I cried to when we moved away to Montana and the first person I ran to when my parents divorced.
