Father’s Day Gift Guide https://nowandgen.com/2020/06/16/fathers-day-gift-guide/ https://nowandgen.com/2020/06/16/fathers-day-gift-guide/#comments Tue, 16 Jun 2020 13:04:50 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=5576 After spending three-plus months in isolation, when every day has felt largely the same, we are taking every opportunity to celebrate. Father’s Day is this weekend (!), so I put together this Father’s Day gift guide because I’ve been looking for special ways to honor the men in my life, from my own husband to friends, uncles and grandpas. Since Jared hasn’t been filming, we’ve gotten to spend a ton of time together. It’s been wonderful…most of the time. He’s been incredibly helpful in supporting me and being the best dad he can be (which may include roughhousing on his end!) In that spirit, this Father’s Day gift guide features items that are sure to make your favorite men smile. Bonus: This list has gifts that start at $6, and features nine items from black-owned businesses, for those who want to support entrepreneurs of color. Happy gifting! 1. Cuisinart Indoor Griddler $70  This gift is a win for you, too: Bring the grill inside, so your guy can cook up steaks and burgers even on rainy days. 2. Golde Matcha Turmeric Latte Blend $29 Jared drinks this every morning for a jitter-free boost. It’s sold out at the moment, so pre-order to stock […]

Turning Words Into Action https://nowandgen.com/2020/06/10/turning-words-into-action/ https://nowandgen.com/2020/06/10/turning-words-into-action/#comments Thu, 11 Jun 2020 04:30:26 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=5553 I have always prided myself on being informed, but, after listening, researching and looking inward this past week, I’ve realized that I still have a lot to learn (and unlearn) about being a true ally. That’s uncomfortable to admit. The perfectionist in me never wants to do or say the wrong thing. But I’m realizing that the only way to move forward in a meaningful way is to be willing to sit in that discomfort and learn from it. This past week I’ve been opening the pages of suggested books on anti-racism, engaging in uncomfortable conversations and digging further into the products and platforms that I support. What I found showed me that I need to be doing a lot more to ensure that I’m listening to and empowering a diverse community.  For example, I consider myself an advocate for the earth yet am unfamiliar with many black environmental activists and how their perspectives can advance my understanding of the issues I care about. I often recommend products here on the blog, but few are made by BIPOC. In the last week, I’ve discovered so many black-owned brands who are making beautiful products that rarely get the press or support […]

DIY: Rocket Ship for the Kids (Plus Cosmos for the Adults) https://nowandgen.com/2020/05/23/diy-rocket-ship-for-the-kids-plus-cosmos-for-the-adults/ https://nowandgen.com/2020/05/23/diy-rocket-ship-for-the-kids-plus-cosmos-for-the-adults/#comments Sat, 23 May 2020 15:14:46 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=5472 At this point, Elon Musk’s mission to Mars couldn’t come any faster. We’ve all been cooped up with nowhere to go and running out of ideas to keep everyone entertained. We’ve baked bread, planted vegetables, and made chalk obstacle courses—that I still am unable to get out of my kids’ clothes and our new sofa cushions, FYI. And I don’t know about you, but I’m not super enthusiastic about going totally back to “normal” yet. So this means more at-home time. While on a bike ride with the kids, I stumbled upon a refrigerator box in my newly moved-in neighbors’ recycling pile, and it sparked an idea: a DIY rocket ship for the kids (plus, while the kids are going to the Cosmos, I figured I could follow the theme and pair it with my own “cosmos”). Keep reading for a step-by-step guide to make your own DIY rocket ship for the kids, as well as a delicious and easy Cosmopolitan recipe. And tell me in the comments about the best thing your family has crafted while in quarantine!   What You’ll Need 1 large box (preferably a refrigerator box) or 4 equal-size panels of cardboard 2 cardboard panels, equal in width, […]

10 Postpartum Essentials https://nowandgen.com/2020/05/12/postpartum-essentials/ https://nowandgen.com/2020/05/12/postpartum-essentials/#comments Tue, 12 May 2020 15:28:47 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=5204 Since we just celebrated Mother’s Day, I want to highlight the importance of taking care of new moms and some postpartum essentials that can help ease the transition into motherhood. Sometimes, it feels like we worry so much about the baby that we forget about the person who just went through a grueling delivery.  Giving birth is a life-changing event that should be openly discussed. It’s one of the most challenging and transformative experiences a woman can go through. I found sharing my birthing experiences particularly cathartic, and I was really moved by your stories, birthing journeys, and questions. If you’re pregnant (or know someone who is), there are some postpartum essentials that I think every mama needs. Here, 10 of my favorite items to help nurture yourself during those intense newborn days.  Soft robe The last thing you’ll want to do after giving birth is put on pants—or really any clothes. You’re incredibly sore all over and it’s a tad tough to walk. Since you want something non-binding and open in the front that provides easy access for breastfeeding, if you are going that route, I’ve found that a soft robe is the ideal postpartum look. This unisex robe […]

Celebrating Mother’s Day From Afar https://nowandgen.com/2020/05/10/celebrating-mothers-day-from-afar/ https://nowandgen.com/2020/05/10/celebrating-mothers-day-from-afar/#comments Sun, 10 May 2020 17:16:13 +0000 https://nowandgen.com/?p=5405 She is about 5’ on a good day. Her blonde hair kisses the nape of her neck and her green eyes shine so bright. She makes everyone feel a ray of sunshine with her infectious smile (sometimes with pink lipstick on her teeth). I grew up on her Marion Cunningham waffles. I would watch her make the recipe in the evening and wake to the smell of the batter wafting out of the iron. In each square, I’d carefully pour butter first, then top it off with pure maple syrup. It was a ritual we had every morning that I stayed at her home. She would dust it with confectioners sugar and a dollop whipped cream to make sure I was extra spoiled and I never had just one. My grandmother gave me a lot of firsts: The first time I went fishing, the first time I went bra shopping, the first person I cried to when we moved away to Montana and the first person I ran to when my parents divorced. She also gave me my first introduction to gardening and cooking, and she was the first one to teach me about kindness. My grandmother’s motto was always […]
