I actually, belatedly, just came across it on YouTube and was fascinated. I did the three-month gluten-free detox on the advice of my doctor a couple of years ago and it was amazing – but have drifted back to it again.

And now my depression and anxiety have flared really badly again and I have found myself kind of binge-eating gluten-rich products….so I was intrigued to hear and/or be reminded of the link between gluten, the gut and mental health.

You (and McCall) have inspired me to try gluten-detoxing again and work on my diet again. I hope your gluten-free week was good and just wanted to say that I love this blog and all the stuff you post on Instagram etc. You are such an inspiring person because you are open and love learning and I really hope I get the chance to meet you in person some day! Take care and have a lovely day xxx

But I feel like I don’t know where to start. Also, my family’s schedule is so busy, sometimes we just eat on the go. This will be a huge lifestyle change for my whole family. I live in Alabama, and there’s not many options of gluten free choices around here. However, I know I can make it work if I can just find the strength and will power.

My 5yo son went from being covered in horrendous eczema, with bleeding welts, to having completely clear skin in 3 weeks. Because that irritated gut also results in other enzymes not being produced, most Gluten Intolerances are accompanied by Lactose Intollerance (and visa versa). The expression being an “old fart” has truth in that the percentage of the population that is Lactose intollerant is the ~same as the age ie at age 20, 20% of the population is lactose intollerant, at age 80, 80% is lactose intollerant. Moreover, the more intollerances one has, the more risk of triggering inflamation and an intollerance for something else, as the gut cannot effectively produce other enzymes while it’s in an inflamed condition.

Back to Gluten though – in Australia, Monash University is now identifying many seeming cases of Gluten Intollerance as actually Fructan intollerance. So when someone who eats GF … still gets a reaction like a Gluten Intollerance, it may be that Fructans are to blame (eg GF glucose may still contain fructans). This means that a GF diet certainly helps – because Gluten grains also contain fructans. But it may not be the Gluten that is evil, but the Frutans in the Gluten grains. It also means some otherwise lovely fruit are also off limits eg stone fruits + pears and apples …For anyone who is interested, the FODMAP diet is outlined at https://www.monash.edu/medicine/ccs/gastroenterology
I believe they also have a handy app for working out which foods are ok or not (I’ve not used it so cant say how good it is personnally)
They are also having success in combating IBS using FODMAP … which seems to have helped my daughter, who is in post infective chronic fatigue after glandular fever + gastro bugs.

Good luck to y’all guys, hope the belly aches and eczema are all gone soon 🙂

I have already made your gluten free banana chocolate chip muffins….they are a great snack at work..
I’ve had to put more effort into shopping and cooking/baking most of my food so everything is less processed. It feels good and everything tastes better. Too soon to quantify any major effects but I do feel less bloated/gassy!
Tx for the info!

I’ve read a lot about gluten too. I gave it up when hearing it could relieve me of chronic migraines. I detoxed from it and migraines are gone! I couldn’t believe the difference. I also have a tremendous increase in energy and lost 10 lbs. Autistic kids benefit from eliminating gluten from their diet as well. It took about a month to feel the change. During the detox, I was tired, groggy and had a headache everyday. However, I gave up caffeine and refined sugar at the same time. So glad I did though!! I feel great and had some other benefits that I didn’t expect.

Thank you both so much for this post, this was so insightful and I think I disected the information in every question! Since reading about Gen’s Gluten-Free week, I’ve been inspired to try it (I’m in love with Gen’s menu in the previous post so I’ll be trying that as closely as possible for my first week!), and even more so reading this because I really relate to some of the mental and physical health symtopms, and I’ve been looking for a way for a long time to try and combat them. I am so much more aware now and I’m keen to see the changes a gluten-free diet makes to my overall health. Thank you both!
